CDL Practice Tests by U.S. State

The federal Commercial Driver's License program — created by the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 — sets the minimum standards every state must meet, but each state runs its own licensing office, decides on fees and scheduling, and adds local road rules to its CDL handbook. CDL Prep Hub provides the same complete bank of practice questions for every state, plus a quick reference page for each state's licensing agency.

What's the same in every state

The General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Hazardous Materials, Tank Vehicle, Doubles & Triples, Passenger, and School Bus knowledge exams come from the AAMVA Commercial Driver License Manual model. The required pass score (typically 80%), the federal medical certification requirement, the federal background check for hazardous-materials endorsement, and the basic disqualification rules are uniform.

What changes from state to state

States differ in the minimum age to obtain an interstate or intrastate CDL, the fees charged for testing and licensing, the specific documents required to prove identity and residency, the on-road skills test routes, and the wait times before a retest after failure. Many states have specific rules for the agricultural exemption, school bus drug-testing programs, and intrastate-only commercial endorsements. Always confirm details with your state's licensing agency — every state page on this site links you directly to the correct office.
